Three rows, best mpg: Sorento Hybrid
Six or seven seats and 34 mpg with AWD. The third row works best for kids and shorter trips.
Most room and towing: Telluride Hybrid
Seven seats with second-row captain's chairs, 31 mpg with AWD and up to 4,500 lbs of towing. Telluride gas vs. hybrid.
Mostly electric commuting: plug-in hybrids
The Sportage and Sorento Plug-In Hybrids come standard with AWD and can cover many daily commutes on electric power alone, then run as hybrids for mountain trips.
Hybrid AWD at Altitude
Kia hybrids pair a turbocharged engine with an electric motor, and turbo engines lose less power in thin mountain air than non-turbo engines. On long descents from the Eisenhower Tunnel or Vail Pass, regenerative braking also recovers energy that would otherwise turn into brake heat.
