Up to 2,000 lbs
Small utility trailers, a pair of jet skis or a teardrop camper. Sportage Hybrid, Sorento Hybrid and the plug-in hybrids.
Up to 3,500 lbs
Many pop-up campers, small fishing boats and loaded utility trailers. Sorento EX and X-Line, Carnival, EV9 Wind.
Up to 5,000 lbs
Many small travel trailers and mid-size boats. Telluride (every trim), EV9 Land and GT-Line.
Towing Tips for the Colorado Mountains
- Leave a margin. A common rule of thumb is to keep the loaded trailer at about 80% of the rating, especially for I-70 climbs to the Eisenhower Tunnel.
- Tongue weight should be about 10% of the trailer's weight. Too little causes sway.
- Use a lower gear on long descents so the engine helps slow you down instead of overheating the brakes.
- Turbo engines like the Telluride's 2.5L lose less power at altitude than non-turbo engines, but heavy loads still work the cooling system hard on long grades.
- Kia's higher ratings assume a trailer with its own brakes, and Colorado law also requires brakes on heavier trailers.
- Towing with an EV9 or plug-in hybrid cuts electric range noticeably. Plan charging stops before you go.
